The person and the role

We’re looking for an experienced Technical Director to join the team in our Manchester office.  This is a new role, created to drive forward our technical offering and to ensure excellent and consistent standards across our technical teams. You will also be responsible for the development of the team and leading on resourcing and implementing new technologies.

You will also be passionate about helping us use digital to protect, save and change lives. We achieve this through our work with charities, non-profits and CSR projects. We’re fortunate to partner with organisations tackling poverty and homelessness, promoting equality and learning, and building solutions to issues that define our times, including cancer, Alzheimer’s and HIV/AIDS.

Salary:  Dependent on experience
Contracted hours: 35 hours per week, with a flexible approach expected to meet business needs and regular travel across the UK.

Key Responsibilities

You will:
  • Be accountable for the technical architecture, delivery and quality of client products
  • Manage and direct the Front End and Platform Development teams, including personal development planning and carrying out appraisals
  • Contribute to strategic planning for future technical roles including producing job descriptions and assisting our Talent Manager with the hiring process
  • Communicate with clients and third-party vendors
  • Support the project management team with their technical understanding of progress, issues and blockers across projects
  • Direct systems architecture design and pitching this to new clients
  • Support the Senior Leadership Team with the sales pipeline  
  • Identify opportunities for growth within current clients and products – helping product managers interrogate feature backlogs
  • Ensure the best technical practices across client engagements
  • Ensure there is a deep understanding of clients’ businesses and their technical solution needs across the delivery team


Desirable skills, knowledge and experience

  • 5+ years leadership experience of multi-disciplined technical teams
  • Proven track record in a senior development role and experience of leading a technical team
  • Exemplary skills in presenting complex technical solutions to business and charity leaders, technologists and investors simply and with credibility, without falling back on jargon.
  • Track record of delivering new products and software solutions
  • Excellent communicator with outstanding leadership skills
  • A consultative approach, skilled at gaining buy-in and commitment from the team
  • A Strategic Thinker – Commercially aware with an understanding of how to exploit technical developments and create competitive advantage
  • Outstanding technical skills with the ability to research and understand new technologies and developments
  • Highly logical problem solver demonstrating strong insight
  • A good understanding of coding standards, preferably in both front and back end development
  • A good understanding of PHP, .Net, C#, HTML, CSS, Java, Javascript and database technologies
  • Agency experience is essential
